KBB BIRMINGHAM PREVIEW: Snapshot
18 February 2010

Jeff King, managing director, Allied Kingswood

Q What are you doing at the kbb Birmingham show?
A We are using the show as a platform for launching the new and restructured Allied Kingswood. Over the past six months, we have gradually been introducing new products and ranges to our portfolio and the show will be our grand finale to the launch. We will be displaying three kitchen ranges, called Evo Küchen, Linea Küchen and Novus, all brand new and exclusive to Allied. Allied Kingswood is now the exclusive national distributor for Teka sinks, taps and appliances, and Kuppersbüsch and we will also be showcasing black chrome appliances from Kuppersbüsch. Finally, visitors to our stand will be the first to see our new German bathroom range, Badea.

Q How's business?
A We have been seeing some very positive signs of business improving, and are currently receiving encouraging enquiries. However, there is no denying things are still tough. Retailers are on the lookout for something new to attract their customers, which is why our new and exclusive displays of products will make the visit to our stand extremely worthwhile.

Q How do you feel the retail market has changed since the downturn?
A While the desire for new styles and finishes is still undoubtedly there, I think that consumers have become much more cautious, and often completely re-evaluate their spending habits. People who were originally looking to purchase at the top-end of the market are now often moving down to the middle, while people originally at the middle are looking at entry-level products.

Q Could kbb Birmingham mark a fresh start for the industry?
A I think now, more than ever, the industry needs the kbb Birmingham show, and it is vital that everyone gets behind it and gives the show their support. The industry needs a motivational lift, and the kbb show is the ideal place for this. It will be a fantastic opportunity to see new products, network with other retailers, manufacturers and distributors, and discuss ideas and products, as well as providing inspiration and ideas for future products and designs. My feeling is that this show will be a very positive and productive event for the industry.
